The Didier Drogba Foundation aims to provide better access to healthcare and education for the most vulnerable African populations and has high-profile backers such as Pele, John Terry and Frank Lampard.
The Daily Mail reported that out of £1.7million donated by royalty, sports stars and businesspeople to the foundation, only £14,115 found its way to help children in Africa.
While the newspaper’s report also states that £439,321 went on “lavish fundraising parties”.
However, the Montreal Impact striker has hit back at the claims, calling the story “factually incorrect and libellous” in a statement released on Thursday.
Drogba, who made over 250 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, has accused the Daily Mail’s journalists of “jeopardising the lives of many thousands of African children” and added “there is no fraud, no corruption, no mismanagement and no lies.”
The Charity Commission has launched an investigation into “serious regulatory concerns” after the Daily Mail handed over their evidence.
