News photos have revealed the unfortunate act that led to the
disfiguring of a Congolese boy after a brutal attack by chimpanzees.
Dunia Sibomana is considered to be
lucky after a group of chimpanzees jumped out of some trees and attacked
him and two other boys while they were playing close to a preserve in
their native Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Dunia, is said to have survived against all odds, ending up severely disfigured, unlike the rest of his counterparts.
Unfortunately, Dunia survived but his lips had been ripped off with one cheek torn apart, leaving him with severe muscle damage.
Following the attack which occurred two years ago,
killing Dunia's four-year-old brother and his young cousin, Dunia has
been the target of bullies making him shy and withdrawn.
Dunia's disfiguration now makes it hard for him to eat, swallow or communicate.
The
8-yr-old is now set to undergo a rare and complicated surgery at a Long
Island hospital which will use tissue and muscles collected from his
forearm to be used to recreate both of his lips.
An associate professor of dentistry at Stony Brook Children's Hospital, Dr Leon Klempner, hopes that Dunia would finally be able to open and close his mouth, eat and talk normally.
Dr. Leon Klempner spoke about the surgery saying:
"As you can imagine, not having any lips, the food can just come right out.
"He drools all the time and can't pronounce different words.

"We're
feeling very optimistic. We're hoping after the surgery he'll
reintegrate into society and perhaps go back to school or have some
semblance of a normal life."
We sincerely hope that Dunia will have a semblance of full recovery.
