Tragedy struck in Nnewi, Anambra State on Thursday evening as a factory fire claimed no fewer than120 lives.
The cause of the fire at Chikason factory, which also razed several
buildings near the factory and raged for over three hours, could not be
ascertained at press time.
An eyewitness told our correspondent that “while the fire was on, many buildings closed to the factory caught fire.
Another source said, “It is a pity… Thank God for saving my sister
and her family from the incident. They live very close to the plant. As
it is now, they have carried up to 20 corpses along the road.”
According to the Red Cross representatives, who spoke on condition of
anonymity, the fire started with a gas explosion killing about six
persons on the spot.
The Red Cross representative also said that if not for the timely
intervention of the Fire service, that the fire would have caused more
havoc in the community.
The Red Cross representative also noted thàt the dead had been moved
to the mortuary while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.
An eye witness noted that it was difficult to ascertain the extent of
damage as houses were razed down and efforts were being made by
official to ensure that the fire was extinguished.
The Governor, Willie Obiano who visited the scene commiserated with
the people of Nnewi, noting that it was a critical period to have
casualties.
